The Federal Minimum Wage Law Is on Your Side
In 2007, the federal government passed a law raising the federal minimum wage in three stages. The current rate of $6.55 per hour increases to $7.25 in July 2009. The California minimum wage was increased from $6.75 to $7.50 on January 1, 2007, and from $7.50 to $8.00 on January 1, 2008. If your employer is paying you less than the federal or California minimum wage, you are entitled to file a claim for all money owed to you for the hours worked plus overtime you may be owed and possible punitive damages.
